SCA Students Excel at Fine Arts Festival

February 22, 2017

SCA is thankful for a job well done by our students at the ACEL Fine Arts Festival held on January 28 in Pineville. During the event, our students represented not only their talents but also the spirit and character we promote at Southland.

In the area of art, Nori Sepulvado (8th grade), Maliyah Nickles (7th grade), Dawson Birdsley (8th grade), and Emma Dousay (7th grade) submitted art work and photographs. The students ended up with good and excellent ratings. Emma Dousay's photo received a superior rating.

During the day, there were several opportunities to be involved in language arts. Jamie McGowen (Junior) presented an impromptu speech and received an excellent rating. We had many students participate in the spelling bee. Juliette Hampton (Junior) won first place and Joseph Paul (6th grade) received second place. Londyn Nerio (8th grade) showed her skill in the poetry session and received an excellent rating for her writing.

Harmonic Union receives the "Best Performance" award

In music, Isaac Sotillo (Sophmore) received an excellent rating for his solo "Tell Your Heart to Beat Again." Students Ethan Wynn (8th Grade) and Charles Schaffer (Sophmore) both received superior ratings for their solos. All three groups (Young Men Ensemble, Harmonic Union, and SCA Choir) walked away with a superior rating in the small and large ensembles. Harmonic Union received for the second year in a row the "Best Performance" plaque.

Our Bible bowl team gave a good showing by remaining in second place for most of the quizzing. Missing the last question caused them to end up walking away with a trophy for 3rd place.

Our students are blessed to have Pastor Brandon Osborne, Mrs. Rita Jackson, Mrs. Lindsey Goodman, and Mrs. Julie Ryan who work diligently with them in Southland's choir program training them for excellence.  They will be participating in LMEA Music Festival and ACEL Honor Choir in March.  We are excited to see our arts program continue to grow.
